The World of the Hollow


Through bio and genetic engineering and the advent of biotic augmentation, infection, disease, and defect, even cancer, have been almost entirely eradicated. That which remains is little more easily managed with medication. Injuries which once left permanent, crippling side effects have become little more than a minor inconvenience. Even the process of ageing has become arbitrary.

The procedures required to “reverse aging” is expensive, and in the Hollow’s current state, resources are too low to be allocated to such things. While life-spans are near triple their previous rate, age will eventually begin to outpace medicine’s capability to maintain function.

New-age biology has made it difficult for pathogens and toxins to compromise the health of an individual. Sickness and poison should never kill anyone. The effects of that which would mean “certain death” would be slowed to the point where the enfeebled would have ample time to obtain treatment.

Engineered pathogens and toxins are much the same. Additionally, any such a bio-weapon capable of real damage would be difficult to control, and would be easily traced back to a source. The likelihood of such an attack is incredibly low; the damage dealt would be insignificant, mitigated by contemporary medicine, and quickly quarantined and cured.

Nanotech weapons, however, remain a real threat. Such weapons can attack any system with little resistance, they are difficult to detect, and nearly impossible to control once released. Nanotech weapons don’t give a damn about an immune response. Just imagine a harmless looking cloud of dust just before it begins to tear apart the lipid layers of your cells.

Such weapons have become very banned by every Nation within the Hollow. Still, most terrorists within the Hollow are unconcerned with kill-count. Control of living beings is more important, enter Neuromancy and Desperation Disease.


Enhanced organs has replaced under-performing natural biology, having become ingrained in the very DNA of each species. True evolution has remained on the side-lines where bio and genetic engineering is capable of more accessible and efficient solutions to biological limitations.

While new organs may be cultivated and/or cloned from extracted and reprogrammed stem cells, the Hollow lacks the technology to produce biology from scratch, and Neurons have proven temperamental.

Cloned Neurons cannot be transplanted. The new cells produce a unique Aura in and of themselves which is incompatible with a host.


Many choose to augment the functionality of the body with artificial implants. Biotics artificial constructs grafted into the user’s own existing biology. Nano-machine swarms are common providing improved general health, but larger structures may be added to the body to improve physical capabilities.

Augmented Cognition

Exocortex a popular external platform which modifies higher brain function and awareness.

Artificial Prosthesis

Like biotic augmentations, but will replace the user’s biology entirely. Prosthetics are generally cheaper and more easily replaced than replacement biological organs, but are described as “stale”. Nervous systems can only be simulated and are entirely reactionary providing very limited feedback to their user in lieu of real sensation. An artificial arm will work just as well if not better than a biological counterpart, but the user’s Aura remains absent from the system.

Replacement Parts

Occasionally, the Character’s organic structures may become damaged beyond use or completely lost. This is rarely fatal lest the Character literally loses their Head, but structures may need to be replaced which often requires invasive surgery. If a Character does require such an operation, they will find an adequate hospital within any Urban Corridor. Surgery takes time, much of which the Character does not have; Surgery itself can take up to 24 hours, and recovery takes 2 Long Rests.

Many Hunters opt for Machine Prothetics which take much less time to install and have reduced recovery time.


The Divine had always been pressed on resources, and developed a technology which would sustain their kind as they fled the Fae.

Upon reaching an age at which their body is beginning to show signs of failure, or if their body experiences a great amount of trauma which cannot be recovered naturally, a person may be placed on Palingenetic Stasis. While in this Stasis, they are placed in a coma-like state, and any damage a person has sustained, down to the genetic level, is repaired. Their body is restored to a state of youth and perfect health. This process usually takes several decades to complete depending on the state of the person prior to dropping into Stasis. If Palingenesis is interrupted, serious injury or death may occur.

Palingenesis is available at any Urban Corridor, although space is limited, and only a Nation with which the Character is allied will accept them.

Side Effects

In order to compensate for damage to a person’s genetic structure, which most everyone will experience, some genes must be repaired or replaced. Thus, after every session of Stasis, a person’s physical appearance, and even their personality will change. Usually, these changes are subtle at first, and their personality will remain intact through several cycles, but physical changes become apparent after only two or three cycles of Palingenesis. There have been occurrences, though rare, of someone completely changing after a single session in Stasis, but this only usually occurs after exposure to high levels of radiation, massive trauma to the body, or direct exposure to Central Dogma.

Besides this, memories from distant cycles, or information which a Character no longer holds a strong attachment to, are often forgotten. It is possible that a person may exist from the Lost Age, or beyond, but not realize it as their memory of that time has been lost.

Quantum Bio-Computing

Aura, and thus consciousness, is derived from biological quantum computation. All living cells exploits quantum mechanics in some way or another, but neurons are in and of themselves powerful quantum singularities capable of collapsing quantum information, simulating reality around them. Aura is the product of this collapse, and the proof of consciousness.

Contemporary biotechnology is unable to manufacture biological matter capable of quantum computing, let alone manufacture biological matter which can produce or at least accommodate Aura. With such technology, any biological structure can be built from the ground up. Bio, gene, and nano engineering may be unified, creating a new era of enhanced organs and biotics. Machines would become faster, and even capable of conscious thought. New designer life-forms can be constructed for various uses.

Quantum Bio-engineering would change everything.
